How to practice
Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the daily practice of Nichiren Buddhism. You can start today, wherever you are.
Sit upright with your back straight, on a chair or on the floor.
Place your palms together in front of your chest and keep your eyes open.
Repeat Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in a clear, steady voice, at a pace that feels natural.
Try five minutes each morning and evening. Chant about whatever matters to you.
Nam means devotion. Myoho is the Mystic Law, the fundamental law of life. Renge, the lotus flower, blooms and seeds at once, expressing the simultaneity of cause and effect. Kyo means sutra, or teaching.
Members also recite portions of the “Expedient Means” and “Life Span” chapters of the Lotus Sutra each morning and evening. Local members are glad to teach you, and you can join community gongyo at the center.
